Coastal Path Project: Portchester Castle to the Delme Creek Roundabout

An exciting vision to enable people with a disability to be able to access and enjoy a local footpath round Cams Hall along to Portchester. The fantastic coastal views, wonderful countryside brings so much improved quality of life that we feel this should be available to everyone including those who use scooters or walking aids, not just those with good health!

A group of people formed a Steering Group in September 2002. It was soon agreed that such a huge project had to be in three phases. The route divides easily into three sections. First around Cams Hall Estate, then along the foreshore, then to the Portchester Castle.

From local history we know that the used track round Cams Hall estate had been walked for well over 30 years. The planning agreement for the golf course included provision of 1.8 m wide path, this is needing maintenance.

A chance conversation between our late founder and chairperson Mrs Lorraine Herrington and Barrie Hill Shopmobility Manager on countryside access, lead to the setting up of a steering group in September 2002 to explore the feasibility of creating an all weather, all ability footpath around the Cams Hall Estate (section 1 on map) adjacent to the creek at Fareham.

Before we could proceed we needed to change this path to a "Dedicated Right Of Way" (ROW), this process took two and a half years before all interested land owners signed the legal papers to hand it over to Hampshire ROW Dept (2006). Fundraising then started to raise the £120,900 needed to resurface the path, Grants from; Veolia Environmental (£25,000), Groundwork Uk (£49,900) HCC, FBC, & partnership organizations, meant that we raised all the money by August 2009. Work to resurface the path will start in September 2009 with a completion date of December 2009. This will be a fitting memorial to our late founder Lorraine, and interpretation panels and a memorial seat will reflect this alongside the path. Future plans to extend the path to Portchester Castle depend on raising the necessary funding and the feasibility of such a huge project (we would be considering £Millions of funding required!!)."
